FAQ
Answers before you start growing
Everything students ask about what's covered, how the courses are filmed, and what you need to take part.
Common questions
What people ask before they enrol
Grouped by what you're deciding: the course itself, enrolling, how you learn, and what you need on hand.
Still have a question?
Call us or send a message and we'll help you choose the right course.
What does Plot & Root Garden School teach?
Three things, in order: soil and compost, sowing and planting, and seasonal growing. Together they take you through how to build healthy soil, get seeds and seedlings away, and keep a vegetable garden producing across the seasons.
Who are the courses suited to?
Anyone growing food at home, from a first vegetable bed to an established plot you want to improve. The courses start with the basics of soil and sowing before moving into the seasonal work.
Where are the courses filmed?
In our own no-dig market garden in Christchurch, filmed through every season of a South Island year, so you see the real jobs as they happen outdoors, not a studio demonstration.
Do I need a garden already to start?
No. The soil and compost lessons cover building good growing conditions from scratch, so you can apply what you learn to a new bed or an existing one.
How do I enrol?
Browse the current courses at /courses and choose the one that matches where you're at. Each course page has the details you need to get started.
Can I learn at my own pace?
Yes. The courses are online, so you can watch and work through the lessons any time that suits you.
Do I need to live in Christchurch to join?
No. The garden is in Christchurch and that's where the courses are grown and filmed, but the lessons are online, so you can learn from anywhere.
What equipment do I need to get started?
Basic hand tools for your garden and somewhere to grow, whether that's a bed, a container or a plot. Each course talks you through what's needed for the jobs it covers.
